Drone Photography :A threat to Flamingoes
Drone photography may seem harmless, but in ecologically sensitive zones like Mannar and Elephant Pass in Sri Lanka—especially when it comes to flamingo habitats it poses serious risks
As Drones resemble aerial predators It causes Flamingos to panic and flee. In Mannar and Elephant Pass, these flamingos are often either resting during their migration or feeding in shallow lagoons. Disruption can reduce their ability to feed and recover energy. If disturbed repeatedly, flamingos may abandon the site entirely, reducing the region’s ecological importance.
Parts of Mannar and Elephant Pass are within or adjacent to protected zones, RAMSAR wetlands, or bird sanctuaries. Drone operations violate Sri Lanka’s Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance or environmental regulations without proper permits. Most drone pilots do not obtain the necessary permissions from the Department of Wildlife Conservation or Civil Aviation Authority. As a strong nature enthusiasts we condemn irresponsible photographers and insist the Authorities to take stern action.
